Joseph Shaw

Joseph Shaw is Senior Vice President, Strategy and Consulting, at Colliers International. In his current role, Joseph is responsible for representing the broad range of Collier’s expertise and capabilities across Canada and delivering solutions to complex real estate problems facing owners and investors.

Mr. Shaw has over 30 years of real estate and finance industry experience focused on debt, property and capital market transactions predominantly in the United States and Canada. Prior to joining Colliers, Joseph was most recently Managing Partner, Head of Institutional Sales, Hazelview Investments, a large investment management firm specializing in investing Canadian multi-family properties for institutional investors.  Prior to this, Joseph was the Chief Investment Officer, Barnhart Asset Management, a boutique advisory firm managing money for AIMCO, Chief Investment Officer at MCAN, a publicly traded mortgage REIT and spent 20 years with Manulife Financial, primarily as the Managing Director, US & Canadian Real Estate Investments where he bought or sold over $6 billion of properties. He was instrumental in the creation and structuring of Manulife’s first real estate fund. Preceding his tenure at Manulife, Mr. Shaw provided real estate advisory and transaction services to over 50 clients in four countries for the real estate investment banking business of CIBC Wood Gundy, TD Securities and Deloitte and Touche.

Mr. Shaw teaches at the Rotman School of Business, University of Toronto and at Western University’s Urban Development Program. He was adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, Metropolitan University and Humber College. He has lectured on real estate at Harvard University, for the Urban Land Institute, and for the Real Estate Property Association of Canada and consults as an expert witness. Mr. Shaw is a past President of the Greater Toronto National Association of Office and Industrial Properties (NAIOP) and former Board Member of the Chartered Realty Investor Society. He is an active volunteer with the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute where he graded CFA exams for over 20 years and currently sits on their Private Markets Advisory Committee. Mr. Shaw has been continuously writing questions for the CFA exam since 2010. Mr. Shaw chairs the Independent Review Committee of Edgepoint Mutual Funds and is a Board Member of AGinvest, a Canadian investment manager focused on Ontario farmland.

Mr. Shaw holds the Chartered Financial Analyst and the Chartered Realty Investor designations, a Masters of Science in Real Estate from Johns Hopkins University, a Masters in Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Windsor, and an Honors Bachelor of Arts (Urban Development) from Western University. He also has completed the Certificate in ESG Investing from the CFA Institute and holds various real estate and finance licenses.
